Diversity Presentation- WHOLE ME: Deaf Culture & Community

Diversity Presentations

The Old Forge Library will host a series of presentations on several Thursdays throughout the Fall that address the topics of diversity, inclusion, and equity.

10/17/24 @ 6 pm: WHOLE ME, Inc., of Syracuse, NY: Deaf Culture and Community

Hearing people often think of deafness as simply “an inability to hear.” Being deaf is also about being part of a community with its own history, values, and culture. As allies of the deaf community, we will learn about misconceptions and stigmas and help promote equal treatment and inclusive behaviors.

For 20 years, WHOLE ME, Inc. has been reaching out to serve deaf and hard-of-hearing people in Central New York. They provide programs and activities that promote educational, employment and social success for deaf/hard-of-hearing children, adolescents, young adults and their families through mentoring, literacy, life skills and transitional skills training, early intervention, community service, advocacy and rights awareness.

Other presentations in the series will include:

  • 10/24/24 @ 5 pm: Mohawk Valley Community Action Agency, of Utica, NY: Helping People, Changing Lives and Ending Poverty.

Each presentation will be conducted by a regional specialist who will inform attendees about current equity and inclusion practices and those to consider adopting. Through learning to support each other and look past our differences, we forge communities that are stronger and more dynamic for all.

There will be refreshments following each program.

The series was generously funded by the Community Foundation of Herkimer and Oneida Counties.
