Road bike enthusiasts will find no shortage of quiet roads throughout Hamilton County. Any of the state roads make for excellent riding with quiet traffic and smooth pavement. The scenery as riders parallel Indian Lake on Route 30 and then tour up to Blue Mountain Lake on Route 28 is beyond compare.

Gravel cycling and mountain biking

Gravel cycling is a popular choice for many, blending the fun of on and off-roading, and Hamilton County is brimming with fun and unique gravel trails. Explore the region by way of gravel bike, as you wind through exhilarating lakeside trails, historic Great Camp routes, or opt for a variation of multiple trails. Gravel trails in the region offer a stunning ride for experts and beginners alike, so wherever your skill level, you’re sure to find picturesque scenes that reward your efforts.

The famous Black Fly Challenge, held annually between Inlet and Indian Lake, takes hundreds of riders on a 40-mile trip though the Moose River Plains, and is one of the highlights of the summer riding season. This area is also home to a series of well-signed dirt loops that take riders along closed pavement sections and dirt roads.

The new mountain biking trails at the Mt. Sabattis Recreation Area in Long Lake blend incredible views with wild trails that pack a punch! Set high over the lake boasting views of the surrounding mountains and waters of the region, you can choose between four different trail routes to carve through. The trail features include a pump section, hair pin turns and a bridge crossing, with opportunities for every level of rider to get in on the fun. 

For a different off-road experience, check out Fern Park, a popular recreation area in Inlet. Don't miss Oak Mountain Bike Park in Speculator! Suitable for beginner to advanced riders, and fun for the whole family, the trails incorporate a combination of flow, natural and manmade features, as well as technical roots and rocks as they run down the mountain through mixed hardwood forests and ski trails.

327 Big Moose Rd

Moss Lake is a beautiful place for a picnic, a hike, a cross-country ski, horseback riding, and wildlife viewing. It was the site of the Moss Lake Camp for Girls from 1923 until 1972. A historical sign tells the story at the trailhead. 
The wildlife viewing platform is a great way to experience Moss Lake.

The Moose River Plains Wild Forest is part of the 80,000 acre Moose River Plains Complex, a collection of public lands crossed by more than 40 miles of old dirt logging roads.

Otter Brook Road

This trail is an old road that ends at Beaver Lake in the Moose River Plains Wild Forest. This is the site of the old Wilcox Hotel and sawmill.
The whole family can enjoy this lake hike.
North Lake Road

The trail to Lower Sargent Pond is marked with both snowmobile and hiking trail markers. It goes primarily through hardwood stands with occasional stands of softwoods.

Uncas Road
Raquette Lake, NY 13436
Beaver Brook Bog is a birding area located off Uncas Road, near the village of Raquette Lake. The trail is on the right when leaving the village.

Limekiln Lake Road

The Old Dam Nature Trail loop, located near Limekiln Lake campsite #87, is an easier 1.3 mile loop in the Moose River Plains Wild Forest.
There's interesting scenery on all the hiking trails at Limekiln Lake.
North Rondaxe Road

This trail starts on North Rondaxe Road as a beginner trail, then turns to intermediate past Stafford Pond. The trip connects Big Moose Lake and Lake Rondaxe. A 16.5-mile loop is possible using Rondaxe Road, Route 28, and Big Moose Road.
Moose River Plains Wild Forest

Located in the Moose River Plains Wild Forest off of Rock Dam Road, this access offers good, low-country hunting around the backside of Mount Tom. It's a narrow, little-used path, but it's worth the effort.

Ride through charming small towns with attractions and services. Lodging and dining available roadside in the towns of Newcomb, Minerva, North Creek, Indian Lake, Blue Mountain Lake, and Long Lake.

Hunt Club Road

Get out into some of the besting birding and cycling habitat in the Adirondacks. Getting there Turn right from Route 28 in Raquette Lake, drive 5.3 miles to the end of Sagamore Road, and turn right on Hunt Club Road.
This old road is a favorite day hike.
Big Moose Road

The proximity of this hike to the community of Inlet makes this area very accessible to visitors and year-round residents alike. The best time to visit would be early spring or after some good rain, if you want to see the falls flowing steady.
160 Route 28

The TOBIE trail connects Thendara (T), Old Forge (O), Big Moose (B), Inlet (I), and Eagle Bay (E). It spans 16 miles of paved and unpaved paths, including snowmobile trails. It is primarily used by hikers and bikers.

Third Lake Creek really has it all: hiking, bird watching, cycling, skiing, snowshoeing, and maybe even some fishing. Follow this quiet herd path through the spruce and balsam trees along a winding creek.

This is an easier trail that passes Upper and Lower Ponds, with a final destination of Sucker Brook Bay on Raquette Lake. It is also used as a mountain biking trail.

Moose River Plains Wild Forest

The Seventh Lake Mountain Community Connector encompasses 14.3 miles of intermediate and expert riding trail. It was built in 2013 as a snowmobile and mountain bike trail that can be accessed at four locations.
