Hamilton County is a big one but it's easy to navigate and is centrally located for would-be adventurers, so that getting here is easy from any direction! And no, you don't have to go from town to town on snowshoes, but you can if you want to!

The Adirondack Mountains of New York are conveniently located within a few hours of most northeastern metropolitan areas and getting here by car is easily done. Just pick your destination and then decide which scenic route you'll take to get here. Coming from Rochester? It's an easy three hour drive. Travelers from the Syracuse or Albany areas will find the trip even shorter. Of course, you should plan on a little extra time; there are so many great places to stop, admire views, or grab a snack you'll want to take your time and enjoy the journey! A few fast Adiron-facts:

  • The term "vacation" was invented here! In the 1800s, city dwellers escaped from the heat and humidity of crowded areas by vacating to the Adirondacks!
  • The Adirondack Mountains are made of rocks more than one billion years old. You can even see some of these rocks on the many waterfall or fire tower hikes in the area.
  • Hamilton County is home to some of the wildest lakes in the Adirondacks, including Indian Lake, Lake Lila, and Raquette Lake. Raquette Lake is even the largest natural lake in the Adirondacks!
  • History has often been made here. The first hotel in the nation to have electricity was in beautiful Blue Mountain Lake, and the Great Camp-style of architecture can be seen all around the area.
