Info

Route 28
Inlet, NY 13360
info@experienceouradirondacks.com

This moderately difficult trail follows a ridge overlooking the beautiful Fourth Lake. Please note that this route is not as well-used as others in the area, so it might be overgrown in places.

Getting there

From the intersection of Route 28 and Big Moose Road in Inlet, continue on Route 28 west toward Old Forge. Continue for 1.5 miles to the trailhead for Sis and Bubb Lakes on the right.

By the numbers

  • 5.6 miles round trip
  • 1,050 feet of elevation gain

Hiking

Start by following the Sis and Bubb Trail for about a quarter mile and look for the Vista Trail, which comes in on the left. From here the path starts climbing, at times quite steeply, over open rock. The rock can be slippery, so exercise caution if it has been raining.

Once on the ridge there are several ups and downs as the small bumps provide many obstructed views out over Fourth Lake. The trail at the end descends steeply and comes to an intersection with the Mountain Pond trail. Turning right here leads to the pond. Turn left to continue down to an old forest road and take another left. This old forest road is part of a multi-use trail system that follows Route 28. Follow this trail system to loop back to your car.

Winter

This is a challenging winter trail, and should only be done if you have prior experience snowshoeing in the winter. This is not a good cross-country skiing trail, although the multi-use trail at the bottom can be.
